Bring Comfort and Joy: Become a Companion Volunteer

Make a difference in someone’s life simply by being there. As a Companion Volunteer, you will bring comfort, dignity, and joy to patients through friendly visits in their home, assisted living, or skilled nursing facility. Your presence supports both patients and their families during a meaningful time of life.

What Companion Volunteers Do:

Share stories, listen, and offer a caring presence  Read aloud, sing, or enjoy music together Watch a favorite movie or play a game of cards Create crafts or enjoy simple activities Provide light household support when needed

Flexible scheduling based on your availability Opportunities to connect in a deeply meaningful way Ongoing training and support from our hospice team

Qualifications:

·         Volunteer must be at least 18 with reliable transportation

·         Criminal background check, drug screening & TB test

·         Completion of hospice volunteer training and orientation

Turn Your Creativity into Compassion

Use your crafting skills to bring warmth, comfort, and joy to hospice patients and their families. Our Crafting for Comfort Volunteers create beautiful handmade items that offer a personal touch of care to those we serve. Every stitch, card, and creation reminds our patients that they are loved and remembered.

What You Can Donate:

Crochet or knit shawls, scarves, hats, and fingerless gloves Crochet, knit, or no sew blankets and lap-sized blankets Fidget/sensory lap blankets for patients with memory care needs Handmade cards for patients and families (Birthdays, Holidays,

Donation Guidelines:

All items must be new and unused Must come from a smoke-free home and be in good condition Crafted with care and appropriate for patients in a healthcare setting

Why It Matters:
Your handmade items provide warmth, comfort, and connection during an important time in our patients’ lives. This is a wonderful way to give back, even from home, and make a lasting difference through your creativity. Donated items are presented to our patients in Northwest Indiana by hospice trained volunteers and staff.

No hospice training or orientation is needed for this opportunity. There is no commitment or required number of items needed, just contact the Volunteer Coordinator to donate handcrafted items.

Paws & Compassion: Bring Smiles and Comfort with Your Therapy Pet

Share the healing power of your certified therapy animal. Pet Therapy Volunteers provide comfort, companionship, and a joyful distraction to hospice patients and their families in homes or care facilities.

What You’ll Do:

Spend time with patients, offering comfort and companionship Participate in friendly visits with your certified therapy animal Follow a volunteer care plan agreed upon with the hospice team

Pet Qualifications:

·         Certified/registered therapy animal (most commonly dogs)

·         Up-to-date vaccinations (rabies & distemper) and health screening

Volunteer Qualifications:

·         Therapy animal/handler liability insurance coverage

·         Volunteer must be at least 18 years old with reliable transportation

·         Criminal background check, drug screening & TB test

·         Completion of hospice volunteer training and orientation required

Use Your Office Skills to Make a Difference as an Administrative Volunteer

Do you enjoy staying organized and supporting a team? Administrative Volunteers help our staff provide excellent care through a variety of office tasks. This is a meaningful opportunity if you prefer a non-patient-facing role.

What Administrative Volunteers Do:

Answer phone calls, take messages, and assist staff with follow-up calls Copy, file, and prepare mailings Create and organize admission packets Assemble volunteer orientation and in-service materials Help with supply inventory Support special projects as needed

Why Volunteer in the Office?

Flexible scheduling during business hours (Monday–Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM) Opportunities to build skills in organization, communication, and teamwork A meaningful way to contribute to hospice care without direct patient contact

Qualifications:

·         Volunteer must be at least 16 with reliable transportation

·         Criminal background check & drug screening

·         Completion of hospice volunteer training and orientation
