Is Your Dog Itching to Make a Difference? Do you want to be a volunteer but wish you could take your furry baby with you?

The way a dog loves unconditionally makes such a difference to our patients and the community that we serve. Whether it is to help with emotional or physical health, or just to bring smiles, it makes the life of a hospice patient more comfortable and meaningful.

Our office provides care to patients in seventeen counties in Northern Illinois. We provide a wide variety of opportunities and meet you where you are! Our volunteers give their time as they are able and we create a volunteer schedule with you based on your availability.

* If your dog isn't certified but you want to volunteer, please let us know and we can discuss how to get the certification completed. Therapy dogs are certified to be fit with all immunizations up to date and have also been certified by the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program or other appropriate accrediting agency (Therapy Dogs Inc., Therapy Dogs International, etc.)

Many patients may feel isolated or long for their home and loved ones. With our Supportive Hands program, volunteers create a calm and comforting environment that helps patients relax and feel at ease. Patients get support through physical touch and a hand and arm massage while they listen to the peaceful sounds of a babbling brook, amazon rainforest, or anything else that brings them tranquility. Our staff and volunteers service the areas in which they live. Our office provides care to patients in many areas of Houston. We provide a wide variety of opportunities and meet you where you are! We invite you to make a difference in the life of a fellow military veteran! You were there for each other when you served so very far away from home and family, and we invite you to make that same difference today. You can be a listening ear for a veteran who is facing another tough battle, a life-limiting illness. Unity is committed to providing our Veterans with premier end-of-life care. We arrange a Hospice for Heroes ceremony for each Unity Hospice Veteran, and it can be videoed as an everlasting legacy of what they have done for us. The patient is presented with a beautifully boxed American flag and an official salute is conducted, thanking them for their service. Veteran volunteers are needed to visit with patients and to participate in and conduct honoring ceremonies. We welcome questions about this volunteer position! Who doesn't feel better after a good haircut? A good haircut can help a hospice patient feel rejuvenated, happier and with improved self-esteem! If you have a current cosmetology or barber license and are willing to complete volunteer training, YOU can make a difference for a hospice patient!

Use your passion for music to create personalized music playlists for patients with dementia! Study the impact personalized music has on people living with cognitive and physical challenges. As a Music & Memory certified care organization, we provide training and certification through musicandmemory.org. Through this partnership, volunteers have access to unlimited training, resources, volunteer support, and peer discussion. This would be an EXCELLENT opportunity for prospective music therapists or students that want to study first-hand the effects of music on the brain and core memories as well as gain experience in the field! How can volunteers help? Interview families to identify musical favorites for their loved ones with dementia Create personalized music playlists Spend time with individuals while they enjoy their music Evaluate behaviors before, during, and after patient listens to personalized music and adjust playlists as needed We welcome questions about this volunteer position! Unique position for individuals passionate about end of life care. This is a non-medical support role for persons with formal doula training or those who are interested in learning about the EOL doula mission and skills. A death doula's work ranges from logistical planning for the time before, during and after of death; conducting rituals or comforting practices; helping the dying person reflect on their life and values; and explaining the bodily functions of dying to caregivers. There is also opportunity for the EOL doula to provide extended support to loved ones and family following the death of the person receiving hospice care. Please reach out to begin the conversation about how you can help people with a life-limiting illness in a tangible way through your own compassion.

Unity Hospice is looking for Administrative Volunteers to help support our patients and families behind-the-scenes! These volunteers could perform a variety of roles: Writing cards to patients and families Helping to assemble patient intake packets and orientation binders Making Care Kits for families facing the end of their loved one's life Organizing supplies for our Veteran's honoring program Calling patients/families to check in on their med and supply needs Calling patients/families to wish patients a happy birthday or send cards for birthdays Printing documentation for our team and facilities Assisting with other administrative tasks needed in the office Hospice patients and their families are facing an often difficult end-of-life journey, and our office team is here to support them in whatever way we can! We love our volunteers and the assistance they provide in making sure our families feel cared for. We promise to treat you with the adoration you deserve and ply you with delicious snacks. Because our volunteers are privy to patient information and spend time with our staff, we do require them to go through an onboarding process that includes fingerprinting, a tb test, a drug test and an orientation.
